How to remove white stains on vinyl flooring?

This is not as simple as it sounds, and we see a lot of articles on the web repeatedly saying to use baking soda and vinegar or something similar. But baking soda and vinegar are not solutions that can be applied everywhere, and that is the only answer they know when asked to clean something.

Using Gasoline

So, in this case, the first thing you need to find out is the exact cause of the stains. In my experience, I tried vinegar; it went away for a few minutes, then reappeared! Meanwhile, hubby walked up to the home and experimented with paint thinner first.

The location reappeared. Then he used gasoline — gasp! — shock… — and the spot vanished. He said something to the effect of dissolving, like, petroleum products, Whatever. I went all the way up there to see for myself, since I didn’t believe him. I can’t believe it; I don’t care how it happened; it’s gone.

Most of these white residues are burnt marks due to keeping hot objects on the floor. So what you need to understand is, you can never clean out the residues caused by burning the surface.

The other residues, which are made for various other reasons, can usually be repaired by using strong cleaning solutions.

So in this case, you have to understand that protecting is way better than repairing.  Do not forget that the floor is easily damageable and that you need to use it carefully to avoid any damage. Using carpets in places where they are very likely to be damaged is one of the options that you can take.

Using WD-40

  2. Scuff the scuff marks with it. Scrub gently in circular motions until they’re gone.
  3. If they do not resolve, they are most likely scratch marks that cannot be removed.

What causes discolored vinyl flooring?

The main cause of discolored vinyl flooring is a lack of care for the floor. When the floor is always interacting with dust, water, sand, solutes, food, etc. The floor starts to lose its shine and quality with time.

So if you need to see a shining floor without any residues on it for a long time, regular cleaning is essential. It is your responsibility to clean the floors at least once a day using a mop. If you are not able to find any cleaning solution, at least use water to mop the floor.

  • Adhesives

When an adhesive not recommended by the manufacturer is used, or when the application is not done correctly, the vinyl can be harmed from below. Oils, dirt, and filth travel through the vinyl’s lower layers, finally appearing as permanent yellow patches on the flooring.

  • Sunlight

Sun damage is a key cause of yellowing. Areas that have been constantly exposed to sunshine or high heat for an extended period of time tend to fade and show a significant color variation.

This type of color change is most noticeable around patio doors, wide windows that receive a lot of sunlight, and even around the fireplace.

  • Dust

Always remove your shoes before walking on vinyl flooring. The dirt, gravel, and chemicals in asphalt irritate the vinyl and cause discoloration over time.

  • Installation problems

One of the most prevalent causes of discoloration is improper installation. One of the most common errors is failing to provide an appropriate substrate beneath the boards.

A poor-quality subfloor might allow moisture to enter and destroy the boards from below.

When humidity enters the design layer, it can dilute the color finish and modify the design, resulting in degradation.

  • Spills

Spills can also stain your vinyl flooring, whether they are liquid spills like juice or vegetable oil or solid spills like greasy meals. Certain veggies and fruits may also leave unsightly stains. It is critical to deal with spills as soon as they occur.

Why is my vinyl floor turning gray?

As we’ve discussed earlier, the white residues, the gray residues, and discoloration are caused by:

  • Moisture.
  • Mold growth.
  • Adhesives.
  • Spills etc.

And the most common reason for a vinyl floor turning gray is interacting with the sand that you and your family members bring into the house when they are coming back home.

This problem is very controllable and what you have to do is lay a carpet on the line that people usually step on. So when the carpet is there, the sand, dust, and mud that they bring will not interact with the floor, and then a long life that shines on the floor will remain as it was.

How to clean a grayed vinyl floor?

When using any kind of solution on a vinyl floor, you have to wash the floor first and then apply the solution with a soft cloth. If the dust and the sand particles were there when cleaning it would make the damage unrecoverable with the friction.

So, in this case, make sure you’ve cleaned the floor well with clean water before any kind of cleaning solvent application.

  • Apple cider vinegar is one of the best cleaners for vinyl flooring. The vinegar’s acidity aids in removing filth and grime without leaving behind a soap or wax buildup. Simply combine one cup of cider vinegar with one gallon of hot water, then clean with a damp mop while constantly washing it with hot water. If you want to disinfect while you clean, use white vinegar instead of cider vinegar.
  • Try applying some WD-40 lubricant or jojoba oil to a towel and rubbing the area to remove any stubborn marks. To get rid of any remaining traces of lubrication, thoroughly clean with the vinegar and water combination.

What are the disadvantages of vinyl flooring?

Many say vinyl floors are the best solution for their floors, but in my opinion, they are not the best because they have many more drawbacks than some other floor materials. So, what are the drawbacks to vinyl flooring?

vinyl flooring
  • Removal is difficult, especially if adhesive is used during installation
  • Repairs are not possible
  • Wood floors have a shorter lifespan
  • There is no negative impact on home resale value
  • VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
  • Not environmentally friendly; it is difficult to recycle

Any kind of flooring always costs a lot of money and time, so flooring needs to be done very carefully and the decisions you make have to be the best considering everything which is needed. So as I said, you must consider the above drawbacks of vinyl flooring before investing in it.
